HP Breaks Promise — webOS 2.0 Upgrades for Palm Pre and Pixi Not Coming

Jon Rubinstein, the head of HP’s mobile division and former CEO of Palm Inc., has some bad news for most users of his company’s smartphones: the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, and the Plus versions of both, will not be updated to webOS 2.0.

HP and Palm LogoThis news comes as a disheartening surprise to users, since HP said they were committed to releasing operating system upgrades on all Palm models.

Rubinstein said that the old Palm hardware would be overburdened by webOS 2.0, and HP and Palm could find no way to run the new system on the old machines.

A Special Offer
There could be a silver lining to this unfortunate dark cloud that HP has cast over Palm: Rubinstein says that webOS users will receive “something special” when HP rolls out the new Pre3, Veer, and TouchPad this summer.

Exactly what this means is not yet clear.

An operating system upgrade for the Pre 2, which is in the process of being rolled out by Verizon, is apparently still a possibility. This model already has OS 2.0, but OS 2.1 was officially announced yesterday.

What do you think of this move? Will the Palm users out there stick around for the upcoming webOS 2.0 devices, or are you?moving on? Sound off in the Brighthand forums.
