One of the most eagerly anticipated new devices of the season is now reaching customers’ hands, albeit in limited quantities.
Several Brighthand readers have reported receiving units they ordered last week from HP’s Small and Medium Business web site.
There’s bad news for anyone who wants one of these and hasn’t already placed an order with this site, though. HP says an hx4700 ordered today won’t be shipped until October 8.
However, there have been some posts in the Brighthand hx4700 Series Forum from people who have placed orders this week with a few retailers and already received their devices.
The devices these people report receiving are the iPAQ hx4700. HP has long had a practice of changing the product numbers for its iPAQs depending on what channel they are being sold through. When this model is sold through the business channel it is called the hx4700, but when sold through the consumer channel it is called the hx4705. Aside from the name, these models are identical.
A Quick Overview of the iPaq hx4700 Series
The hx4700 is the first iPAQ ever to include a 4-inch VGA display. As this model uses Windows Mobile Second Edition, this screen can be easily switched between portrait and landscape modes.
The hx4700 includes both 802.11b and Bluetooth 1.2 wireless networking, as well as a CompactFlash slot and an SD/MMC slot that supports SDIO.
This iPAQ won’t have a D-pad. Instead, it will have a small touchpad below the screen intended to be used with a fingertip.
The list price for this model is $650.
