Is this the last of HTC First? Reports first began to surface last week that HTC’s newest Facebook handset could have a short life span, as it was speculated that AT&T would discontinue offering the HTC First here in the US. Sales of the device during the first month of release were less than stellar, totalling under 15,000 units, and according to a source from BGR, the carrier has since given up hope on the handset turning around.
According to a recent report from Mobile News, AT&T doesn’t seem to be alone, as it was announced that the HTC First’s launch has been cancelled in the United Kingdom. Facebook, which is funding HTC’s new handset reportedly made the decision to put a hold on the release, pulling all pre-orders as a result.
Facebook later divulged to Engadget that it decided to pull the HTC First as a result of customer feedback regarding the device’s Facebook Home interface. The company noted that it plans on adding new features and customization to the interface over the coming weeks. As a result, Facebook recommended holding off on the HTC First in the UK, but remained adamant on its commitment to “bring our customers the latest mobile experiences”.
Does this mean that we’ll see a new and improved HTC First? Or, perhaps a new Facebook-oriented handset all together? According to an unnamed source at Mobile News, it’s lights out for the First: “The HTC First has been pulled and will never go on sale in the UK,” said the source. “Sales in the US were poor and Facebook has taken the decision not to give it a more widespread release.”
