In Android vs. iPhone, Google Chairman Brags ”We’re winning”

While there’s no doubt that the Apple iPhone is a very popular device, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is quick to point out that the Android OS is vastly outselling the iOS.

Eric SchmidtIn an interview with Bloomberg, Schmidt said that Android’s share of the smartphone market was five times higher than the iPhone’s was in the third quarter of this year.

“We’re winning that war pretty clearly now,” he said.

A Bit Of History

Schmidt when on to say, “This is of the scale of 20 years ago — Microsoft versus Apple”. This is a reference to the days of the first personal computers, when Apple’s Mac OS was battling it out with early versions of Microsoft Windows.

This is a competition that Microsoft won by being more widely available — dozens of companies licensed Windows — and as a result Windows-based computers were cheaper. History is repeating itself, as Android has these same advantages over the iPhone.

This hasn’t held true, however, for tablets. At least not so far. Currently, the Apple iPad still outsells all Android tablets.
