Introducing…  Bluetooth Version 2.0

Your Tablet PC, cell phone or PDA is bound to have a built-in Bluetooth radio. This short-range wireless technology has evolved into a a brand new faster variant.  While the US has been slow to adopt Bluetooth technology, it has been all the rage in Europe. Thankfully awareness of Bluetooth and its adoption is growing in the United States, mostly due to mobile phone service providers offering wireless headsets and earpieces to customers for use in their Bluetooth enabled phones.

Bluetooth 2.0 a.k.a. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) offers a significant speed bump over its predecessor. While Bluetooth 1.2 offers a data transfer rate of 1Mbps, Bluetooth 2.0 is 3 times faster boasting a data transfer speed 3Mbps. Additionally, a significant increase in power efficiency results since less energy is needed to move data at the increased rate. This of course translates to longer battery life – one of the most important factors to the mobile professional or user who is “on the go”.  One final noted feature, is the ability of Bluetooth 2.0 to allow the connection of multiple devices without the lag factor that sometimes plagues Bluetooth 1.2.

Bluetooth 2.0 peripherals are expected to be available this summer or fall. Currently Apple Computer has jumped on the 2.0 bandwagon and is already including the new BT technology in it’s coveted PowerBook product line.
