Leader in Education Technology Teams With Palm to Further Cost-effective, Portable Technology Solutions for Schools

CUPERTINO, Calif. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ —
AlphaSmart, Inc., a leading provider of technology solutions for education,
and Palm, Inc.,the leading provider of operating systems for use in handheld computers and the leading provider of handhelds, today announced that AlphaSmart has licensed the Palm OS(R) platform. The agreement enables AlphaSmart to use the Palm OS technology to expand its product
offerings to new segments within the education market.
The flagship AlphaSmart 3000 is a low-cost, portable technology solution
used in thousands of classrooms in the United States and by millions of
students throughout the world. A highly useful writing, keyboarding and
test-taking tool, the AlphaSmart 3000 addresses a broad range of needs in
K-12 education. It is offered at a fraction of the price of a full-featured
computer, so an entire class can be economically outfitted with AlphaSmart
3000s, enabling students to learn and advance at their own pace.
AlphaSmart plans to continue to introduce enhancements to this popular
product line while pursuing the development of Palm OS based solutions that address specific curriculum requirements of high schools, community colleges and universities, which have a higher price threshold than AlphaSmart 3000 customers. As AlphaSmart pursues the development of products based on the Palm OS platform, the company plans to create links between its Palm OS based products and the AlphaSmart 3000 product line.
“AlphaSmart and Palm share a commitment to provide the education
marketplace with affordable computing solutions that make it easier to learn
and to teach basic skills,” said Manish Kothari, AlphaSmart chief marketing
officer. “While the AlphaSmart 3000 is highly successful in a wide range of
applications in education, there are specific segments with different
requirements. We see the Palm OS platform as the technology of choice to meet the needs of these new customers.”
“AlphaSmart has been delivering high-tech, cost-effective learning tools
to the education market since 1993. It is a clear leader in the education
marketplace,” said Mike Lorion, vice president of education markets at
Palm, Inc. “Our new relationship is an important part of our strategy for the
education market and an expression of our commitment to technology that
simplifies teaching, learning and communication.”
“Palm’s strategy is to license the Palm OS technology to market leaders,
such as AlphaSmart, who can use the power and flexibility of the Palm OS
platform to benefit their markets,” said Gina Clark, vice president of
platform marketing at Palm, Inc. “As the leading handheld OS provider, Palm is dedicated to innovating and moving forward the Palm OS platform, adding new
technologies and capabilities, and helping licensees such as AlphaSmart bring to life their creative solutions.”
