LG has created an LCD screen that’s just 2.4 inches but boasts a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels.
It reaches this resolution through sub-pixel rendering. This takes advantage of the fact that, on an LCD, each pixel is made up of red, blue, and green sub-pixels. Through a visual trick, these can be made to look somewhat like full pixels, allowing a screen to appear like it has a higher resolution than it actually does.
LG hopes to see products with this screen shipping before the middle of this year.
More information — including a picture of this screen in action — is available on LG’s web site.
