Last week, PalmSource announced that a large handset maker had agreed to license the Palm OS. However, at that time, the name of this company was not revealed.
PalmSource has now announced that its latest licensee is LG Electronics, and that this company will make smartphones that run the Palm OS.
“The flexible, open and powerful nature of Palm OS is an ideal match for our industry leading mobile handsets,” said Skott Ahn, executive vice president of LG Electronics. “We believe our customers will appreciate the new Palm Powered phones we will develop and distribute.”
LG Electronics develops electronics, information, and communications products.
It claims to be the world’s leading manufacturer of WCDMA (UMTS), CDMA and GSM handsets, and the fastest growing manufacturer of mobile phones worldwide.
LG Electronics did not say when it would release its first Palm OS model.
It will be one of several companies making Palm OS smartphones. More than 45 companies worldwide have licenses to PalmSource software, including smartphone makers like GSPDA, Kyocera, palmOne, and Samsung.
More information about LG Electronics is available on its web site.
