Microsoft has just released Office Mobile 6.1, which brings full support for files in the new Office 2007 formats to Windows Mobile devices.

Windows MobileWith this new version, users will be able to view, edit, and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 files, in the same way they can work with documents from earlier editions of Microsoft office.

Why Is This Important??

Office 2007 is the most significant upgrade to this suite of applications in about a decade, leading to big changes in the associated file formats. The latest version uses a new Extensible Markup Language (XML) based file format, Open XML, which was designed to facilitate data exchange between different information systems.

This required Microsoft to make big changes in Office Mobile to support the new formats. These changes were not incorporated into the version of Windows Mobile 6 that first became available early this year, but some recent devices come with Office Mobile 6.1 already installed.

Pricing and Availability

The upgrade to Office Mobile 6.1 is a free download from Microsoft’s web site

It is for devices running Windows Mobile 5 for Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 6 models that didn’t come with it pre-installed.

It’s not compatible with touchscreen-less Windows Mobile 5 Smartphones, as Microsoft didn’t release a version of Office Mobile for this operating system. It’s also not compatible with earlier versions of Windows Mobile.

Anyone installing it should be aware that installing this upgrade will take up about 6 MB of space on the device, but it can be put on a storage card. It’s not a ROM update, and can be uninstalled.
