Microsoft has reportedly been working on porting its popular Office suite to iOS and Android for over a year now, and today, the company announced the availability of Office Mobile for the Apple iPhone.
Microsoft will be offering the iPhone Office Mobile app as a free download from the Apple App Store to Office 365 subscribers, but therein lies the rub. Unfortunately, Microsoft is not offering Office Mobile for iPhone for a one-time fee. Thus, the only way to get Office Mobile on the iPhone is to be a Office 365 member. Microsoft has reported to BGR that it currently has no plans to offer Office for iPhone as a stand-alone free product.
Those who wish to try out the software suite on the iPhone, but aren’t Office 365 members, can sign up for a free one-month trial of the service. Microsoft’s subscription based service provides users with access to Office apps via the cloud, with 20GB of SkyDrive storage, and the ability to install the latest Office Suite for Windows and OS X on up to five computers for $10 per month or a $100 per year.
Microsoft was originally expected to launch its ports of its popular Office software last November. However, Microsoft had to push those launch windows back, but now the wait is finally over for iPhone users. There’s no news yet on when the Android version will be released, or whether or not the iOS version will eventually be made compatible with the iPad.
