MobileWizardry and Mobile Digital Media (MDM) will release an official Atari 2600 emulator later this year.

The Atari 2600 was the Sony PlayStation of its day; a very popular home gaming console. MobileWizardry’s Atari Retro is officially branded and licensed in collaboration with Atari. It contains a complete Atari 2600 emulation engine using original cartridge ROM images.

Games will include Adventure, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, Yars Revenge.

Atari Retro was developed using MobileWizardry’s SHARK development kit, which allows a single code base to be recompiled natively onto multiple platforms. This allows the company to easily create versions of this application for different platforms, and these games will be available for Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and Symbian Series 60.

“Atari is excited to offer mobile device users an opportunity to play classic Atari games on the go,” said Jon Leach, Vice President of Licensing for Atari. “Our agreement with MDM allows us to reach an entirely new audience and offer them a new way to enjoy the classic games they love.”

The release of Atari Retro is set for the christmas season on MMC card. The pricing is yet to be announced.
