The release of the new Palm Zire 71 and Tungsten C has caused a lot of excitement. While the masses seem ready to write Palm off for good with every new release, this time they might be getting it right.

A fellow that goes by the name “palm bomb dropper1” over at PalmInfocenter has been dropping bombs all over the place. He’s the one who leaked the first package insert picture we brought you last week. He claims that he works in the factory where these devices are being made. There’s not much of a reason to doubt this, as he appears to have an intimate understanding of the new Zire. From a recent post, here are the specs of the Zire 71:

Thats all I’ve got. Believe me this is not made up, for all you sceptics.
There is a slight delay right now in the production of the unit, so it won’t see daylight as soon as I thought. And from everything I’m hearing, it will most likely be on the $250 end of the scale.

Palm bomb dropper has gone on to post four images that were taken of the Palm Zire 71 with another Palm Zire. Here’s a sample:

Get the other three images here. The photos are a little grainy, but he attributes this to poor lighting. If you look closely in the reflection, it’s easy to confirm this picture was taken with another Zire.

It seems the camera lens slides out, making the unit a little longer when in picture taking mode. Also, it seems that voice recording will not be an option, which is certainly an oversight. I would gladly pay a few more dollars to have this feature. The new Zire is set to hit store shelves in the blister pack, like the first Zire, in mid to late April for $250-$300.

Another posted named “onlypalm4me” who is said to work at an office supply store, noticed both the Zire and the Tungten C in his computer system, It showed the following specs:

Palm Zire 71 $299.99
SKU: 20339340
Model: P80720US

16MB Memory
Built in Camera 640 x 480 res
320 x 320 High res Color Screen
Palm OS 5.2.1
Media Capable MP3 Video Games
TI Arm Processor
Dual Expansion, i.e. SD slot and Universal Connector

Palm Tungsten C $499.99
SKU: 20339313

Intel 400 Mhz Processor
Palm OS 5.2.1

Everything seems in line with other rumors, even the 64MB of the TC.

So it now appears that at least three people on this thread at PIC have seen the Zire or at least noticed it in their computer systems. I’m going to Best Buy today in an attempt to confirm anything I can. And, if you happen to work for any of these mass retailers, take a peek into the inventory system and let us know what you find!
