Last week, HP said it intends to release a series of cellular-wireless handhelds this year. These will be known as iPAQ Mobile Messengers.

It gave the world a sneak peek at the first model in this series, the iPAQ hw6500. However, it didn’t release all the details. Now, some additional information has leaked out about this device. Also, there’s the first word on the second model in this series.

This will be HP’s second cellular-wireless iPAQ, and its first to include a built-in keyboard and GPS receiver. It will be the first Pocket PC from any company with a square (240 by 240 pixel) screen.

HP iPAQ hw6500 One thing that hasn’t come to light is the dimensions of this device. According to BargainPDA, which cites an anonymous source, the hw6500 is 4.5 inches long, 2.8 inches wide, and 0.63 inches thick. This roughly agrees with earlier reports, which said this model is about the size of HP’s first cellular-wireless Pocket PC, the h6315.

This same source goes on to say that the hw6500 will debut on Cingular Wireless sometime during the second quarter of this year. This contradicts earlier reports, which indicated that this model won’t be available until after the middle of the year.

First Glimpse of the iPAQ hw6700

In addition, BargainPDA‘s source has some information on the next model in this series, which will reportedly be called the iPAQ hw6700.

This model will be almost identical to its predecessor, except for one significant change. The hw6500 includes GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Bluetooth. Supposedly, the hw6700 will also include Wi-Fi Wireless networking.

However, to make room, one of the memory card slots in the hw6500 will have to be left out. The first model will include one slot for SD cards and a second for miniSD cards. According to this source, the hw6700 will include only the miniSD card slot.

The hw6700 is expected some time in the third quarter of this year.
