Motorola has introduced a system software upgrade for the Atrix 4G from AT&T. Among an array of other chnages, this updates the version of the Firefox web browser available in Webtop mode.
The upgrade will bring this device to Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread), the most recent version of Google’s operating system for smartphones. There are no profound changes, but rather many small enhancments to the user interface and the apps that are bundled with this operating system.
The Atrix 4G is an unusual device. In addition to being a smartphone, it can be placed into either of a pair of accessories that can turn it into a laptop or a desktop computer. This puts the device into Webtop mode, which allows it to run a desktop-grade web browser. The new upgrade bumps this browser’s version up to Firefox 4.0.
Getting the Upgrade
AT&T has begun sending Android OS 2.3 out to many Atrix 4G units. Those who haven’t received it yet can request an upgrade by going to Settings > About Phone > System updates on their handset. However, this upgrade is being rolled out in phases, so not all users of this smartphone can get it at once. This version must be installed over a Wi-Fi connection.
Those who don’t want to wait can install the upgrade manually. This requires going to Motorola’s support website, downloading the file, copying it onto the handset, and installing it.
