Motorola Droid 2 Might Be Released by Verizon in July

The Motorola Droid has been a tremendous success for Verizon, but it’s now 7 months old and a replacement may be in the offing. This Android OS-based smartphone will supposedly have much in common with its predecessor, but will have a re-designed keyboard.

Motorola Droid vs. Droid 2The flat keyboard on the original Droid has been widely criticized for being too hard to use, and Motorola apparently took the complaints to heart. An image of the Droid 2 that has leaked out shows that this device will drop the D-pad from the sliding keyboard, giving for larger keys, which have been made convex.

It’s not clear if the D-pad has been moved below the screen or eliminated entirely, as no pictures of the entire smartphone are available yet.

Aside from this change, the Droid 2 will allegedly be much the same as the current version, including a 3.7-inch display. It will supposedly have more chrome, though.

One changes that might be made is a faster processor — most high-end Android OS models have a 1 GHz one, but not the original Droid. A better camera is also a possibility.

Coming in July?
This week, Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said that Verizon Wireless is going to introduce two of his company’s Android OS-based smartphones in July.

One of these will almost certainly be the highly-anticipated Motorola Droid Shadow, and the Droid 2 could be the other.

According to an unconfirmed report, the “MOT A955 Droid 2” is now listed in Verizon’s inventory system. The original Droid is model number A855.

Motorola DroidAn Overview of the Motorola Droid
The Motorola Droid is this company’s flagship model, and sports a large, high-resolution capacitive Touchscreen and a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. Nevertheless, it still has a slim design.

This smartphone runs Google Android OS 2.1, and has a suite of applications that can wirelessly synchronize with Google’s services, including Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Maps, as well as Microsoft Exchange. An extensive catalog of third-party apps is also available.

The Droid comes with a 16 GB memory card, GPS receiver, and a 5 MPx camera.

Verizon Wireless is the exclusive U.S. provider of the Motorola Droid.
