Verizon is expected to introduce the Motorola Droid 2 later this week, though that hasn’t yet been officially announced. The price for this high-end Android OS smartphone has now been revealed by the retailer Best Buy.

Motorola Droid 2 vs. Motorola DroidAs its name suggests, the Droid 2 is going to be the successor for the original Motorola Droid, and will be an updated version of this popular model.

It will sell for $200 with a two-year contract, or $600 without contract, according to Best Buy. Apparently, one of this retailer’s stores has jumped the gun by putting out Droid 2 demo units.

Virtually all high-end smartphones sell for $200 these days, so this price isn’t a surprise.

In many ways, the successor to Verizon’s first Android OS-based model isn’t changing — like the original, it will be a slider with a 3.7-inch WVGA display and a landscape-oriented keyboard. The locations of almost all the buttons and ports is going to remain the same.

However, the Droid 2 will replace the D-pad on the sliding keyboard with a set of directional keys, giving room to make all the keys larger (see a comparison). They are also being made convex, rather than flat like the keys on their predecessor. This modification has likely been made in response to wide-spread criticism of the current Droid’s keyboard.

The 1 GHz processor on the Droid 2 should be noticeably faster than the 550 MHz chip on its predecessor.

The original Droid comes with a 16 GB microSD memory card, while its successor will reportedly have 8 GB of internal storage and an 8 GB memory card.

The Droid 2 will allegedly include many of the features of the original, such as a 5 megapixel camera, GPS receiver, 3G (EV-DO Rev. A), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

It will also get some new ones, such as a Wi-Fi hotpot app that allows it to share its wireless connection with up to five other devices. Verizon generally charges extra for this feature.

Coming Very Soon
Information coming from several sources indicates that the Motorola Droid 2 is going to be released this Thursday, Aug. 12.

Verizon has probably not yet officially announced that it’s going to be offering the Droid 2 because the company doesn’t want to cut into demand for the original Motorola Droid.
