UPDATE (July 31):  With July 13 long past and no Android OS 2.2 upgrade for the Motorola Droid released yet, obviously this report was incorrect. This smartphone is now expected to get this system software update during the week of August 2.

Motorola Droid Officially Getting Android OS 2.2 Upgrade Next Week

Motorola has committed to releasing a version of Android OS 2.2 for the Motorola Droid, but hasn’t said exactly when. An unconfirmed report indicates that Verizon will start sending out this upgrade in less than two weeks.

Google unveiled the latest version of its mobile operating system last month, but so far the Google Nexus One is the only smartphone to have received an official upgrade.

Motorola DroidIf information supposedly leaking out of Verizon is correct, the original Droid will be getting its upgrade on Tuesday July 13.  The source for this report points out that unofficial but stable versions of this ROM have already appeared on the Web, so the release is likely getting near, and Verizon introduced the Android OS 2.1 upgrade for the Droid on a Tuesday.

New in Android OS 2.2
The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system is the first to include tethering and portable hotspot software, allowing it to share its 3G Internet connection with other devices over a Wi-Fi connection. According to unconfirmed reports, Verizon intends to charge $20 a month for this service.

Android OS 2.2 is required for devices to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.

This new version also contains a number of other small enhancements, but none of the improvements significantly change the platform.

An Overview of the Motorola Droid
The Motorola Droid is this company’s flagship model, and sports a large, high-resolution capacitive touchscreen and a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. Nevertheless, it still has a slim design.

This smartphone currently runs Google Android OS 2.1, and has a suite of applications that can wirelessly synchronize with Google’s services, including Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Maps, as well as Microsoft Exchange. An extensive catalog of third-party apps is also available.
