According to leaked information, Verizon Wireless is going to release a new version of the Motorola Droid 2 with support for making calls outside of the U.S. An unconfirmed report says the worldphone version will actually replace the current model.

The new version, which might be called the Motorola Droid Pro, is reportedly going to be identical to the Droid 2, aside from being a worldphone — a smartphone that can be used on Verizon’s CDMA/EV-DO network in the United States as well as on the GSM/HSPA networks that are available in most other countries.

The Droid 2 launched last month, and is intended to replace the original Droid, but has been met with generally lukewarm reviews. An unconfirmed report indicates that the Droid Pro is going to take the Droid 2’s place in Verizon’s product lineup.

Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon WirelessWhen this is going to happen is not yet known, as the exact launch date for the Motorola Droid Pro has not yet been revealed, either officially or by unofficial channels. Still, it’s expected sooner rather than later.

Overview of the Motorola Droid 2/Droid Pro
Verizon’s latest Android OS smartphone is a slider with a 3.7-inch WVGA display and a landscape-oriented keyboard.

This device has a very capable web browser, email software, music and video player, and other communication and entertainment applications.

Because it has Android OS 2.2, the web browser supports Adobe Flash, allowing users to access websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.

The Droid 2 can connect to Verizon’s 3G (EV-DO Rev. A) network, and it includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As discussed, the Droid Pro is expected to add support for GSM/HSPA when roaming internationally.

This model is able to share its 3G wireless Internet connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, essentially acting as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. This feature costs an additional $20 a month, though.

Motorola Droid 2 ReviewThe Motorola Droid 2 has a 5 megapixel camera with a flash, 8 GB of on-board storage as well as an 8 GB microSD/SDHC memory card, and its predecessor is expected to offer the same.

The Droid 2 sells for: $200 with a two-year contract. If the Droid Pro replaces this model, it’s likely to cost the same. If the two models are sold concurrently, the Droid Pro is likely to cost a bit more.
