Verizon Wireless has pre-announced a smartphone coming from Motorola called the Droid X. The carrier also revealed some of the specifications of this upcoming Android OS-based model, but stopped short of giving all the details.
According to a “teaser” page on Verizon’s website, the Droid X will have a 4.3-inch display, significantly larger than the screens on any other phone offered by this carrier. The closest is the 3.7-inch touchscreens on the original Motorola Droid and the new HTC Droid Incredible.
Verizon also promises that its next Android OS-based smartphone will have a camera capable of recording 720p video and an HDMI video-out port.
Aside from a picture of the Droid X, so far this is all the information that has been officially announced.
What the Rumors Say
Despite Verizon’s best attempts to keep its cards close to its chest, a great deal of information obout this smartphone has already come through unofficial channels.
The Droid X’s 4.3-inch display will 854×480 (FWVGA) resolution, and it will suppodely have an 8-megapixel camera.
This device will debut running Google’s Android OS 2.1, but an upgrade to the new Android OS 2.2 is supposedly in the offing.
It will allegedly include the Swype text-entry system, as well as a new version of MotoBlur, Motorola’s software that brings together messages from a range of social-networking services like Facebook and Twitter, text messages, and email into a universal inbox.
The Droid X will also supposedly include 8 GB of internal storage and be bundled with an 8 GB microSD memory card.
All other specifications for this model remain unknown, but it’s likely to include the features that are typical in other high-end Android OS models, such as 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver.
Verizon’s teaser page for the Motorola Droid X says that this model is coming soon, without giving a specific date.
Verizon has invited the press to an event on June 23 where it will be “Unleashing the Next Generation of Droid”. Motorola’s Sanjay Jha will be there, and so will Google’s Andy Rubin. The Droid X will almost certainly be unveiled on this date.
According to an unconfirmed report, the launch isn’t coming next week, as this samrtphone won’t actually be released until Monday, July 19.
There is no word yet on the price for this Android OS-based smartphone.
What about the Motorola Droid 2?
The Motorola Droid X isn’t the only high-end, Android OS model from Motorola the be the subject of leaked reports — Verizon is also supposedly getting the Motorola Droid 2.
There has been some speculation that the carrier planed to announced both upcoming Droid models at its event next week, but fact that Verizon’s teaser page only mentions the Droid X makes this unlikely.
