Although an official announcement isn’t expected until next week, details and images of the Motorola Droid X have been leaking out for some time. The most recent unconfirmed report indicates that this model will have a faster processor and slightly bigger screen than first thought.
The Droid X will supposedly be built around a 1 GHz chip, not the 700 MHz one that had been previously rumord.
This same source says this model will have a 4.4-inch FWVGA (854×480) display, slightly larger than the 4.3-inch one that previous reports had indicated. Still, this fits with a leaked comparison image in which the Droid X’s screen appears marginally bigger than the 4.3-inch display on Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G.
Preliminary Overview of the Motorola Droid X
Thannks to numerous unconfirmed reports, a fairly complete list of the specifications for the Droid X is available ahead of the formal unveiling.
It will debut running Google’s Android OS 2.1, but an upgrade to the new Android OS 2.2 is supposedly in the offing.
The Motorola smartphone will also allegedly include the Swype text-entry system, as well as a new version of MotoBlur, Motorola’s software that brings together messages from a range of social-networking services like Facebook and Twitter, text messages, as well as consumer and business email accounts, into a universal inbox.
The leaked specifications list for the Droid X includes an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video as well as an HDMI video-out port which will allegedly offer 1080p support.
It will also supposedly include 8 GB of internal storage and be bundled with an 8 GB microSD memory card.
All other specifications for this model remain unknown, but it’s likely to include the features that are typical in other high-end Android OS models, such as 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver.
Verizon has invited the press to an event on June 23 where it will be “Unleashing the Next Generation of Droid”. Motorola’s Sanjay Jha will be there, and so will Google’s Andy Rubin. The Droid X will almost certainly be unveiled on this date, as well as the Motorola Droid 2.
According to an unconfirmed report, the Droid X will be released on Monday, July 19.
There is no word yet on the price for this Android OS-based smartphone.
