Reports are starting to circulate that a major firmware update for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is being tested right now, one that will address several issues, and also bring some polish to many of this smartphone’s unique features.
Highlighting the rumored enhancements is the addition of kinetic scrolling to the web browser and contact list. Currently, this feature is only available in the Nokia N97, and has been demoed in the announced-but-not-yet-for-sale Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. Kinetic scrolling would certainly add to the usability of the device, but it ‘s not certain if this feature is something that could be added system-wide.
Another piece to this as-yet-unconfirmed update would be the addition of the enhanced homescreen shown on the 5530XM. This upcoming model uses a homescreen that combines the Contacts Bar with the shortcuts bar, and then adds the ability to have up to 20 contacts on the contacts bar. Unlike the N97, the homescreens of the 5800XM and 5530XM do not support additional widgets, such as the AccuWeather or Facebook ones.
Other improvements in this update supposedly will include camera, stability, and several performance fixes.
There is no time given for introduction of this firmware update, but it is assumed that this would be a part of the v.31 release — which usually signifies a major update for Nokia’s Symbian devices.
