It’s another week and two more Clies appear to be on the release date horizon for the U.S. Today on Sony Australia the SJ20 and SJ30 Clie devices went up for pre-order availability. Sony Style in Hong Kong also lists the two devices on it’s site. So the question now is, when and will these devices be released to the U.S.?
The answer to that question is that the devices definitely will be available state-side, but the release date is still a little unsure. The rumor now is that the devices will be shipping to U.S. retailers around the 23rd of September.
The next question of course is, will anybody care that more Clies’ are about to be released? Most market indicators have shown that PDA sales have slowed down greatly over the past couple of months. This is due in part to the economy, but also because the anticipation for the new Palm OS 5 and devices that support the OS will be around the corner soon, and anything purchased now will seem out of date fairly fast as specific hardware will be needed to support OS5.
Having said this, Sony has been gaining market share fast from its Palm OS rivals Handspring and Palm Inc., so maybe there is something to be said about giving consumers a wide array of choices, with the side effect of causing a little bit of consumer confusion in the process. Anyway, here are the specs for both devices and an estimated price on both:
Sony SJ20 specs, (suggested price $200)
Sony SJ30 specs, (suggested price $300)
