Next-Generation iPod touch Expected on Wednesday

Apple has scheduled a press event for Sept. 9 where it will almost certainly release a new version of the iPod touch. It’s possible the much-rumored Apple tablet will also be unveiled at that same time.

There are unlikely to be many surprises in the unveiling of the new iPod touch — the details leaked out months ago.

This device is expected to be the first is this series with a camera and include the basic video editing software that debuted with the iPhone 3GS.

In addition, it’s rumored to be the first iPod touch with a microphone, allowing it to easily be converted into a Wi-Fi phone.

An increase in storage capacity is also considered likely.

Aside from these changes, however, the next-generation model isn’t expected to be dramatically different from the current one — almost exactly the same size and shape, without a change in screen resolution.

There is no word yet on pricing.

In a related announcement, Apple will supposedly introduce iTunes 9, which may make managing software on the iPod touch easier.

Tablet: Maybe, Maybe Not
Whether Apple will announce its first tablet is an open question. Rumors of this device have been flying for months, but these don’t paint a consistent picture of what this model will have to offer.

Reports of the size range from just a bit bigger than an iPod touch to a monster with a 15-inch display.

And rumors can’t even pin down what the operating system will be, with some saying this device will run the iPhone OS, while others say it will be based on Mac OS X.

Still, virtually all the leaks agree that this model will offer all the functionality one expects in a mobile computer — web browser, email software, etc. — plus access to iTunes will let users download music and also play video on the relatively large display. In addition, it will supposedly function as an ebook reader.

Wi-Fi is virtually a given, but some previous reports have said that it may also include wireless data service from Verizon’s mobile broadband network.

While some remain hopeful that Apple will unveil its tablet on Wednesday, other rumors say this model won’t be released until 2010. The truth won’t be revealed until 9/9/09.
