Nokia Bids Farewell to Symbian This Summer

Symbian OSIt seems that Symbian’s swan song is not far off, with the Financial Times reporting that Nokia will be shipping the last of its Symbian smartphones this summer.

When Nokia finishes shipping the last round of 808 Pureviews sometime this summer, it will effectively bring the platform’s 11-year run to a close. Nokia, which owns the Symbian platform, will at that point be completely dedicated to the Windows Phone 8 OS.

For those who still use smartphones running Symbian, however, there is a silver lining: support for the OS is expected to continue until at least 2016. The fact that there are existing Symbian users isn’t a surprise, given that it was the world’s most popular OS until Android surpassed it a few years back.
