Nokia has taken the wraps off Feature Pack 1 for its S60 3rd Edition, a user interface for Symbian OS-based smartphones.
This is a very significant announcement, as a large percentage of the smartphones in the world run the S60 version of Symbian.
This feature pack includes improvements in browsing, location capabilities, and device management functions.
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 is available now to device manufacturers, and at the Symbian Smartphone Show going on in London three licensees are showcasing devices based on Feature Pack 1.
Improvements in the New Version
The latest version of this platform offers a single browser that supports both the Full Web and mobile-optimized content. Other improvements in the web browser include auto complete, password manager, and a floating toolbar that gives quick and easy access to the most-used features.
New advanced device management features allow businesses to manage add-on applications remotely, and the location middleware in S60 makes it possible to efficiently create location solutions.
Other new features in Feature Pack 1 include audio messaging, a video ringtone, an animated screensaver, and multiple alarms.
This new feature pack is backward compatible with the original version of S60 3rd Edition, and applications developed for it will run on older 3rd Edition devices.
