Nokia has just begun taking pre-orders for a smartphone that will boast a 12 megapixel camera. The Nokia N8 is going to be a cutting-edge Symbian^3 model with a large screen, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 16 GB of storage.
This device was first unveiled in the spring, and many have been eagerly waiting for it since then. The wait is almost over: those who are interested can put in a pre-order on Nokia’s website.
The N8 is being sold “unlocked”, which means it can be used with any wireless carrier that uses the GSM standard. However, this also means there is no carrier subsidy. As a result, the N8 costs $550.
Overview of the Nokia N8
This smartphone will have a focus on recording and playing video, and sport a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics.
The Nokia N8 will double as a portable entertainment center, giving users access to HD-quality video with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound by plugging into their home theater system. It is also going to give access to Web TV services that deliver programs from channels like CNN, E! Entertainment, Paramount and National Geographic. Additional shows will also be available from the Ovi Store.
Video will play on a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360, OLED display that will function as a capacitive touchscreen.
Its camera will have a Xenon flash and the ability to make HD-quality videos that can be edited with built-in software.
To hold multimedia content, the Nokia N8 will include 16 GB of built-in storage plus a microSD/SDHC memory card slot, adding up to 32 GB of additional space.
It’s a Phone, Too
More than just a portable TV, this will be a GSM phone with 3G wireless networking (10.2 Mbps max download speed, 2.0 Mbps max upload speed). It will also include Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1.
The N8 will offer social networking capabilities and free global Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn navigation.
Other features will include a 1200 mAh swappable battery, 3.5 mm headset port, FM radio, FM transmitter, accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, and ambient light detector
Symbian S60 Gives Way to Symbian^3
The Nokia N8 is the first model running Symbian^3, an updated version of the Symbian OS with S60. This has been created for touchscreen-based devices, and includes support for gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. Devices like the N8 will offer multiple homescreens for placing apps and widgets.
The new 2D and 3D graphics architecture in the platform will take advantage of the N8’s hardware acceleration to speed up the user interface. In addition, Symbian^3 includes improved memory management allowing more applications to run simultaneously.
Like its predecessor, this new OS includes a suite of communication and personal productivity software, including the ability to synchronize its calendar, contacts, and notes with Microsoft Exchange. Users will be able to get additional third-party apps from the Ovi Store.
