Nokia’s Comes With Music (CWM) service officially debuted this week alongside the S60 5th Edition and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic announcements.
It features a 12-18 month unlimited subscription and over 3 millions song from major and independent labels. It is compatible with the Nokia 5310 Comes With Music Edition, N95 8GB Comes With Music Edition and future devices to be announced.
The initial rollout of the service is in the United Kingdom with more countries to be announced later.
12 Month Unlimited Music Subscription
Comes With Music (CWM) is based on the idea that a subscription should not be lifetime because the devices are not owned for a lifetime. Upon purchasing a CWM device, users receive a voucher for a 12 month subscription. During this period, an unlimited number of tracks can be downloaded from Nokia’s CWM library to the mobile device (over-the-air) or a Windows PC.
Tracks are via WMA (Windows Media Audio) format and are protected by Windows Media DRM.
Conditions of CWM include:
- That for the first 12 months, music must reside with the original Comes with Music device/PC.
- After the first year, transferring a license to a new mobile/PC can be done once every three months.
- Additional licenses must be purchased in order to burn tracks to a CD
Labels Included with CWM
During the debut, EMI was announced as a new label in support of Comes with Music. Additional labels include:
- Universal Music Group
- Sony BMG Music Entertainment
- Warner Music Group
- CELAS on behalf of EMI Music Publishing
- GEMA on behalf of Sony/ATV Music Publishing
- SACEM on behalf of Universal Music Publishing
- MCPS-PRS Alliance
- The Orchard
- Beggars Group
- Ministry of Sound
Through CWM, Nokia is aiming to reach more region-specific labels and music genres in order to get them in front of more people and devices. A recent Nokia announcement added Spain as a Comes with Music partner featuring several bands and labels specific to that country.
At this time, Comes With Music is only available via purchasing new Nokia devices. Information about other devices being compatible with this service have not been offered at this time. There has also been no confirmation on compatibility with Mac OS X and Linux PC systems.
The United Kingdom will be the first market to offer Comes With Music on October 16, 2008 with the 5310 XpressMusic Comes With Music edition. This model can be pre-ordered from Carphone Warehouse now (129.95 GBP).
