Nokia’s N97 Receives Several Application Updates

The Nokia N97 has received some additional application updates a few weeks after its last major firmware update. These are new versions of Nokia-created software for the N97, are — except in the case of Ovi Maps — not installed by default on this smartphone.

Ovi Maps 3.1
The N97 comes with Ovi Maps 2.0, and this can be upgraded to version 3.0 using the Windows PC-based Maps Updater application. However, a newly-released update to Ovi Maps 3.1 can be done without a PC, through the Software Update application on the device.

Ovi Maps 3.1 brings the ability to sync landmarks and routes from the Ovi Maps website. Enhancements on the server are also reflected by using less data to refresh maps.

This application includes driving and walking directions, 2D and 3D map views, integration with the N97’s internal compass and GPS, and voice navigation (as part of the paid aspect of the application).

N-Gage 1.3
The N-Gage Mobile Gaming platform is now officially available on the N97 via this latest software update, and features the touch-based user interface also seen on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic version of the application.

Users of this gaming service can download trials or purchase games directly from the device. A profile links to the larger N-Gage gaming community where users can track progress, join in gaming events, and more.

The N-Gage application is free, but some games do have an additional cost.

Nokia Messaging 10.0
Nokia Messaging is the revamped email and IM application for this company’s S60 and S40 handsets. It features a refined user interface, HTML email, and POP/IMAP support. Email services which support a PUSH protocol are also supported.

Nokia Messaging supports email providers such as Ovi, Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail. Supported IM services include Ovi, AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN.

N97 Phone Memory Update
Because of the additional memory requirements of this third-party software, Nokia has also released a N97 Phone Memory Update. This clears approximately 10 MB of memory from RAM, making it easier to run applications such as Ovi Maps and N-Gage.

The N97 Phone Memory Update must be applied in order to use the latest Ovi Maps and N-Gage applications.

How to Install These Updates
To download these and other software updates to this smartphone, open the Software Updater application located in the Applications folder of the device.

This can be set to check for updates manually or at a pre-determined time period.
