Today, Palm, Inc sent out a press release indicating that it will take the wraps off a new smartphone later this week.
“President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Colligan today invites media to join him for a press conference at DigitalLife on Thursday, Oct. 12, to announce a new Treo(TM) product,” is the exact wording.
Treo 750 or Treo 680
The real question at this point, of course, is which upcoming smartphone in the rumors will be announced at this event? The answer hinges on Palm’s definition of “new”.

Recently, this company began offering the Treo 750v, a device that at this point is exclusively available from Vodafone in Europe. However, a slightly different version of this smartphone is widely expected to be available in the U.S. in the near future.
At the same time, there have been persistent rumors that Palm is going to introduce the Treo 680 in the near future. As this is a Palm OS device that is supposed to be more consumer oriented than the Windows Mobile-based Treo 750, it would fit better in to the theme of the DigitalLife conference.
Whichever device is unveiled on Thursday, Brighthand will be there for the announcement.
