Palm OS 5.0 due out in June The CTO from PalmSource, the division of Palm created to handle the operating systems and related software, has announced their plan to ship Palm OS 5.0 this June. “We have been working with our licensees for quite a while and they have got releases of Palm OS 5 since last year,” said Steve Sakoman, chief technology officer of PalmSource, at a news conference. The interesting question revolves around, which devices will support the new OS? With Palm recently releasing the m130 and m515, and Sony shipping it s latest PDA s in May, who is going to have a device ready for the OS? Palm s OS 5 supports the ARM processors and there is currently not a Palm OS device with the speedy chip. “The principal feature of Palm OS 5 is that it is the first Palm operating system that runs on the ARM family of RISC [reduced instruction set computer] microprocessors which are anywhere from two to 30 times faster than the existing 68K microprocessors that Palm OS today runs on,” said David Nagel, PalmSource CEO. PalmSource is also touting improvements like support for larger screens and a software developers kit that will allow for more flexibility on the programming side. With the excitement around a new OS, I m a little surprised Sony didn t wait another month to be the first with an ARM-based device, but who knows someone s got a trick up their sleeve for sure.
