The Palm Solutions Group has just announced a breakthrough that will allow Palm OS handhelds to have substantially more memory than before. Palm SG and PalmSource engineers collaborated to develop memory technology that extends the amount of RAM possible on a Palm OS Handheld from the current 16 MB to 128 MB.
“The range of potential next-generation hardware and software solutions expands tremendously with this innovation from Palm Solutions engineers,” said Steve Manser, senior vice president of product development for the Palm Solutions Group. “Our memory advance means customers can be confident they’ll have what they need to deploy robust business applications or rich multimedia.”
Though it was developed primarily by the Palm SG, which makes Palm-branded handhelds, this technology breakthrough will be able to be used by all Palm OS licensees, like Sony, Handspring, Samsung, and others.
It is not yet known when devices making use of this technology will be available.
This improvement will allow Palm OS devices to better compete with Pocket PC ones. Until now, no Palm OS device has been released with more than 16 MB of RAM, while all recent Pocket PC models have offered at least twice that.
