Palm Tungsten W to come bundled with WorldMate

We’re still weeks (read: months) away from the release of Palm’s Tungsten W, but details are surfacing about at least some of the software that hopes to take advantage of the wireless connection. MobiMate has announced their WorldMate (also available for PPC) software will be a part of the Tungsten W included software bundle.

WorldMate is a great application, especially for travellers. Here’s a quick rundown of the features:

  • Weather forecasts information from The Weather Channel for 67 US cities and 190 world cities
  • Day/Night map
  • World Clock
  • Currency exchange rates
  • Currency and metric conversions
  • International dialing codes
  • Clothing measurements
  • More…

There’s little doubt Palm is angling hard towards the business traveller with the release of the Tungsten W.

“WorldMate offers key functionality for mobile professionals, allowing users with carrier activation to get weather and currency conversion data in real time, as well as supporting the business traveler with other conversion and time-zone management tools when traveling outside of carrier service areas,” says Rick Hartwig, Palm Inc.’s product manager for Wireless. Nadav Gur, MobiMate’s CEO, declares, “WorldMate shipments are growing exponentially, and MobiMate will continue to develop follow-on products that will provide even more value to international business people.”

The TW has a good deal of potential, although it’s far too early to make any guess as to how it will all turn out. I’m glad to see announcements like this though, as Palm tries to stack their offering with more horses than Handspring’s Treo line. How Handspring responds also remains to be seen. There’s been little to no activity at the rumor mill regarding the next Treo. Hmmmm….
