palmOne held their fiscal 3Q conference call today and while they don’t announce new product on such calls, they did reveal some interesting guidance. First off they confirmed plans to release new products (notice the plural) by the end of their 4Q which is May. They also indicated an investment in EVDO for Treo, which likely points to a Treo 650, or next generation Treo, on the Verizon network.
The call was heavily weighted toward Smartphone, but palmOne continues to contend that the PDA is alive. They have the ability to make that claim, selling 1.4 million Tungsten E units in the first 14 months of that product’s release, accounting for 20% of all US handheld sales. They went on to make sure everyone understood their focus is on making mobile computing easier. While they may have products capable of making calls or playing games, they’re not trying to be a major handset company and don’t want to lose focus on their core business.
As far as new products, I would expect any major announcements to come at the PalmSource DevCon which starts May 24th, right before palmOne’s 4Q closes.
