palmOne has just taken the wraps off a pair of new models in its Zire line of consumer-oriented handhelds.
As its name suggests, the Zire 72 is an updated version of the popular Zire 71. This new model offers a much faster processor, more memory, and a higher resolution camera. It also includes Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.
This handheld runs Palm OS Garnet (5.2.8) on a 312 MHz Intel XScale processor. It has 32 MB of RAM, of which 25 MB is directly available to the user.
The Zire 72’s 1.2 megapixel camera can take both still images and video. It includes a 320-by-320-pixel screen that can display 16-bit color. It also comes with an MP3 player and built-in voice recorder.
Users have the choice of synchronizing the information in this model’s personal information management (PIM) applications with either Microsoft Outlook or the Palm Desktop.
The Zire 72 is 4.6 inches tall, 3.0 inches wide, and 0.7 inches thick (12 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.7 cm). It weighs 4.8 ounces (136 g).
According to palmOne, its 950 mAh battery is capable of powering this handheld for about a week of normal use.
The PalmOne Zire 72 is available now. Its suggested retail price is $299.

The Zire 31 is palmOne’s first entry-level model with a color screen and a built-in SD card slot.
Despite this being an entry level device, it is still quite a capable handheld. It runs Palm OS Garnet (5.2.8) on a 200 MHz Intel Cotulla processor and includes 16 MB of memory, of which 14 MB is directly available to the user.
Unlike palmOne’s previous entry-level models, the Zire 31 can play MP3 files, thanks to the RealOne Mobile Player.
It includes PIM applications that can be synchronized with either Microsoft Outlook or the Palm Desktop.
palmOne did have to make some compromises to reduce the cost of this model. Most significant is the screen. Though this is a color display, its resolution is only 160 by 160 pixels.
The Zire 31 is 4.4 inches tall, 2.9 inches wide, and 0.6 inches thick (11 cm x 7.4 cm x 1.5 cm). It weighs 4.1 ounces (115 g).
Its 900 mAh battery is capable of powering it for about a week of normal use, according to palmOne.
The suggested price for the palmOne Zire 31 is $149, and it is available now.
