In late May, palmOne announced that it had acquired full rights to the brand name “Palm,” and will change its name to Palm, Inc.
At the time, it only said this would come later in the year.
Today, it said that it would officially change its name on July 14.
At the same time, its stock symbol will change from PLMO to PALM.
At some point in the near future, the company will unveil a new logo and design treatment.
What About PalmSource?
The Palm brand had been co-owned by palmOne and PalmSource since the two companies split in October 2003.
palmOne has paid PalmSource $26.7 million for the rights to the name, but PalmSource and its licensees get to keep using it during a four-year transition period.
“Trying to share the brand between two companies didn’t work, and now we’ve fixed it,” said Michael Mace, PalmSource’s Chief Competitive Officer. “The name was more closely associated with hardware in most customers’ minds, so it made sense for palmOne to have the name.”
