Paris Hilton, the well-known celebrity and (unwilling) armature porn star, has had her account with T-Mobile broken into by hackers. Ms. Hilton uses a Swarovski crystal-encrusted Sidekick II.
The break-in happened over the weekend, and all the information from her account was quickly posted on a web site. This includes the private phone numbers of dozens of celebrities and some nude pictures of Ms. Hilton taken with the Sidekick II’s camera.
According to Engadget, the hackers didn’t break into the Sidekick II itself. Instead they hacked into a T-Mobile server where all the data is kept.
T-Mobile is currently investigating this incident. The company points out that, rather than a problem on its servers, all the hacker would have needed to access all the information was Ms. Hilton’s password, which they could have gotten from her.
Still, T-Mobile’s security has been compromised before. Earlier this year, Nicolas Jacobsen plead guilty to hacking into the wireless carrier’s servers.
How It Was Done
Update: According to Engadget, T-Mobile has discovered how Ms. Hilton’s account was broken into.
When someone forgets the password to their T-Mobile Web account, the question that’s asked to confirm the person’s identity is “What is your favorite pet’s name?”
When Ms. Hilton was setting up her account, apparently she didn’t consider the fact that most of the world knows the name of her favorite pet.
