A new PDA hasn’t been released since before Christmas but there are a ton on the horizon. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s definitely coming and what is rumored to be available.

Pocket PC’s

Hitachi Multimedia Communicator Pocket PC
This one has it all, including an integrated keyboard.

Preview – Hitachi Multimedia Communicator Pocket PC (1/6/2003 8:49:15 PM) – We’ve got a pretty good idea now what the new Hitachi PDA will look like and what’s under the hood. The new Pocket PC Phone Edition is also due out before July on the Sprint network.

HP iPAQ h1915
The h1915 is going to be released in Europe with Bluetooth. There’s nothing official about it coming to the US, but it may.

Rumor – HP to Release iPAQ h1915 in Europe (1/23/2003 12:59:57 PM) – Europe has been waiting for the iPAQ h1910 for a while now and guess what? You don’t get it. Instead you get the iPAQ h1915 which is pretty much the same thing…if you are in the US and bought a 1910 you might want to stop reading now…with BLUETOOTH!

HP iPAQ GPRS Device
At the CES in January, HP said they were working on a clamshell GPRS unit. Last week details surfaced to make us think the device is actually nearing production.

Details emerging on new GPRS enabled iPAQ (2/11/2003)

You might remember that we brought you limited details of this development in our CES coverage in early January. New reports are surfacing that confirm many of our original estimates.

Samsung i700
Not the most inspiring of the new Pocket PC’s, the i700 is due out in the third quarter of this year.

Live From CES – Samsung i700 & i500 Preview (1/11/2003 1:05:40 AM) – Andrew and I spent almost an hour with these devices today and left the Samsung booth rather frustrated. The quality is not great for either device and there are some other significant issues. The i500 is very small though and will turn a few heads as a result.

Toshiba e350
Toshiba has done well with the e3xx series but has lacked the quality screen its competition has. Toshiba may be the first to market with a sub-$200 PPC of this nature.

Toshiba e350 to be Released in March – For Less Than $200 (2/15/2003)
In a move to be the cheapest Pocket PC on the market, Toshiba has announced the e350 for $199. The e350 will also provide great value with a 300 MHz processor and 64MB of memory

Palm OS

Fossil Palm OS Watch
The smallest device to use the Palm OS might actually be the hipest too. This unit shows a lot of promise.

Live from CES – Saturday early update (1/11/2003 1:18:34 PM)

  • Garmin’s new GPS Palm device rocks
  • ViewSonic to add to their PDA line
  • Fossil Palm OS PDA watch much improved

    Garmin iQue 3600
The first Palm OS PDA with 64MB of memory also integrates GPS. The iQue 3600 is set to hit the US in April or May.

    Kyocera 7135
It’s available now on the Alltel system for $500 with a two year contract. The only problem is that not very many people use Alltel. We’re hoping to see it on more cacrrier networks soon.

    Samsung i500
The smallest of the Palm OS smartphones, it lacks many of the great features of the Kyocera.

    Sony Clie NZ90
The Clie with everything will make its debut any day now. Units are set to ship as early as the 17th of this month.

    Sony Clie SJ33
Available for pre-order in Japan, the SJ33 will add MP3 playing, a sleek body and a 66 MHz processor to a popular line. The SJ33 is expected in late February or early March.

UPDATE – Sony Clie SJ33 Slips Onto Amazon Store Shelves – Now at Tech Depot Too (2/6/2003 6:48:20 AM) – Tech Depot has pricing now on the SJ33 and it’s coming in at $287. The bad news is that something is wrong with the shipping cost, ground is $25. The good news is there’s a $10 coupon.

Sony Clie SJ33 Released in Japan (1/27/2003 11:22:26 AM) – Thanks to a news tip via email, we now have confirmation that the Sony Clie SJ33 is not only for real, it has been released in Japan. Hopefully the new unit will find itself to the US soon enough.

    Sony Clie SJ22
Less is known about the SJ22, but it’s said to have a color screen and should hit shelves late in February or early March.

UPDATE – Rumor – Sony to announce Clie SJ33 and SJ22 (pictures) (1/22/2003 7:13:18 AM) – Not a huge surprise, but my contact at Sony would not confirm or deny this report. Combined with his statement at CES and the fact he did not deny the SJ33 and SJ22, I think it’s safe to assume these units are for real. Of course the specs are a moving target, but I’d bet we’re pretty close.

    Sony Clie TG50
The TG50 will feature Bluetooth and an integrated keyboard. The FCC has given its approval, but we’re not sure when the TG50 will go to market.

Sony Clie PEG-TG50 Gains FCC Approval – Here Comes Bluetooth! (picture) (1/30/2003 4:04:34 PM) – Is it time to put my Tungsten T on eBay? Sony’s follow-up to the popular T665 will integrate Bluetooth as we expected. Notice the graffiti area is gone and they’ve integrated a Treo-esque keyboard.

    Symbian and Linux

    Motorola a760

To be released in Asia this year, the a760 has it all, literally. No word if or when the US or Europe will see this unit.

Motorola A760 – Linux and Java PDA/Phone (NEW PICS) (2/14/2003)

Motorola has announced the A760, a flip form factor that looks like a hip Treo 300. It’s packed with features like: digital camera, video player, MP3 player, speakerphone, advanced messaging, instant Internet access and Bluetooth wireless technology.

    Sony Ericsson P800
Perhaps the most anticipated unit on this list, T-Mobile will begin selling it in March in the US.

Live From CES – Sony Ericsson P800 Hands On (1/12/2003 2:47:57 PM) – The Sony Ericsson is one of the most anticipated and delayed integrated device out there. We now have hard facts that point to a March release on the T-Mobile system. What’s more, I think it’s almost everything we’ve thought it could be.

    Sharp Zaurus 5600
The follow-up to the 5500, Sharp will be looking to advance Linux on PDAs.

Zaurus line to get Sharper – SL-5600 to be released soon (11/12/2002 11:12:53 AM) – Sharp has confirmed the release of the SL-5600 in the US, and the SL-A300 a horizontal clamshell, in Japan. Sharp’s line relies on a Linux operating system which has been trying to gain steam in the PDA market for the past year or so.
