Update for Cingular Treo
Palm has finally released a software update for the Cingular-based Treo 650. This update includes the fixes to the flash memory system that users on Sprint and other carriers got months ago, addresses issues with poor voice quality, and other smaller tweaks.
Photos of Motorola Q
MobileBurn, Engadget, and others have acquired live-action photos of the new Motorola Q Windows Smartphone. The photos provide a bit more perspective than the PR images available from Motorola, and show the Q in its native habitat. Engadget also mentions a black version of the Q–which would be in line with the Razr cellphone that inspired the device–though the one that they saw was a plastic model, and only the silver Q was functional.
Windows Mobile revenue grows; still not profitable
According to Microsoft’s most recent quarterly earnings report, revenues from Windows Mobile software, both PocketPC and Smartphone, increased 43% in the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30th. This translates to a $13 million dollar increase in revenues over three months, almost as much as the rest of the Windows Embedded division combined. The division also cut its budget deficit by what Microsoft refers to as “a reduction in sales and marketing expense.” In other words, they sold their less capable marketers as a packaged meat product.
Even so, the Mobile and Embedded division didn’t break even, posting a total loss of $14 million for the quarter. However, this is compared to a $39 million loss for the same quarter a year ago. The increasing marketshare of Windows Mobile has obviously helped the division, which with a small amount of luck may reach profitability some time in within the next 6 months.
