How to unlock the Cingular Treo 650

TreoCentral user codywalker has put together a step-by-step guide on how to convert a Cingular-locked Treo 650 to an unbranded, unlocked unit. The proceedure is a complex sequence of actions that could leave your Treo a paperweight if performed incorrectly, so be certain to fully read the directions before doing anything. As an additional caution, the unlock/update proceedure can’t be reversed, so don’t do it unless you’re sure that you want to lose all Cingular applications and customizations.

XM satellite radio for the PocketPC

An enthusiast of XM Radio’s online streaming audio service has created a free gateway that allows PocketPC users to listen to their XM account online. XM Radio’s own XM Online site has been available to subscribers since April, but is incompatible with mobile browsers. The XstreamXM Mobile page offers a basic interface for logging in to XM Online and selecting a channel, thus letting PocketPC users listen on the go. According to users, audio streaming via GPRS service is unreliable, but faster internet connections such as 1xRTT, EDGE, and WiFi should have no difficulty.

Pricing, release timetable for Axim X50 OS upgrade

Dell has posted release details for Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrades promised to users of the Axim X50/X50v line. Users ordering new Axims now will receive a free upgrade package, minus the cost of shipping. Pre-existing users will have to pay $39 for the upgrade, which will be offered on CD. None of the upgrades will be available until this October, which is presumably around the same time that new X50s will begin shipping with the OS preinstalled. On a side note, October is also around Dell’s usual release season, making it possible that we’ll see a new Axim Line debuting alongside the X50 upgrades.
