Wired Mag annual Vaporware awards
Wired Magazine has announced the 2003 Vaporware Awards, a reader-selected roster of technology products that have been “put off, put away or quietly put down.” Amongst the winners for the most delayed, denied, and disaffected tech items was the Fossil Palm OS Wrist PDA, which took spot #8. The Palm OS 5 driver for the Sandisk WiFi SDIO card came in as the #5 most vaporous product. Look at the bright side, Palm users: you’re in a better position than fans of the PC game Duke Nukem Forever, which is now in its sixth year of development, winner of the Vaporware Lifetime Achivement Award.
Also included in the vaporware hall of shame was OQO’s Windows XP-based pocket computer. Occupying the space next to G. W. Bush’s weapons of mass destruction, the OQO had sunk to the dishonorable mentions catagory from last year’s #4 rank on the grounds that it is “now so vaporous that no one is looking forward to it anymore.”
Fossil PDA Watch shelved
Dovetailing from our last story, Fossil has permanently shelved its existing design for a watch/PDA hybrid in the interest of starting from scratch. After lengthy delays blamed on inferior displays, Fossil has scrapped the existing designs in favor of rebuilding a new version. According to a company spokesman, “We’re using this timeframe to further reduce costs and raise performance specifications so we can launch a more competitive product by the summer of 2004.” Translation, the watch took so long to get to market it became obsolete ten times over. One can hope that Fossil will get their act together and actually produce a product this time, but I suspect that we’re seeing the first signs of a retreat from the PDA market.
PocketPC Tools site in trouble
A message from Barry Shilmover, proprietor of PocketPCTools.com:
In the last 18 months this site has gone from an idea to basic site to what it is today. While I have lots in the work (new review portal, etc), I just cannot afford to run it anymore… In December, my Co-Lo went bankrupt and I have been hosting it at work ever since. Usage is up (which is a good thing), we have had 1.7 million page hits since we started. My work has asked me to find another home for this site and I just don’t have the money to do so (I have yet to pay for my hosting and cost of the server, etc). Unfortunate, as this looks like our best month ever.
I am also getting busier with everything else I have been doing and just cannot find the time to post all the reviews and news items that I have come across. I feel that my only option is to shut the site down. If you have ideas or would like to post (partially take over) this site, we can chat. Not sure how long the site will be up… but I will keep it live as long as I can. You can always contact me at mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org.
