Philips has produced a concept design handheld with a rollable screen. Dubbed Readius, the design brings to the table a large lightweight display that’s easy on the battery. The 5″ monochrome display is QVGA (320 x 280 pixels) and readable in both the sun and low-light conditions.
While the technology is still years away, the implications for mobile devices like PDAs are important. As notebooks and Tablet PCs get smaller, and PDAs offer 4″ and larger displays, something has to give. Weight and power consumption become two huge problems as PDAs scale up to compete with other mobile computing options. The concept of a rollable display would do well to combat both of these issues. Obviously they have to find a way to get these into production in color and higher resolutions, but the thought of a PDA that can stretch out to the side to reveal a large display would definitely be appealing to most buyers.
