Qtopia Greenphone Now Available to Developers

Last month, Trolltech announced the Qtopia Greenphone. Now, the company has started offering this Linux-based smartphone to developers.

The Greenphone is not intended to be released to the public. Instead, it will be a device on which Linux developers can test their mobile applications.

This smartphone is being offered as part of a software development kit (SDK) that also includes a Qtopia Phone Edition 4 Series license.  Available in limited quantities, Greenphone SDKs can be purchased today by contacting Trolltech at sales@trolltech.com.

Developers interested in getting this smartphone and SDK have several options:

Greenphone Software Development Kit Professional — Intended for those who wish access to the full source code of the Qtopia Phone Edition for creating commercial software. Included in this version is access to Greenphone updates and full Trolltech support. The version of Qtopia Phone Edition includes Qt and Qtopia tools, as well as the toolchain for the device. The price is $695, plus the cost of a Qtopia Phone Edition relevant license to the specific need. 

Greenphone Software Development Kit Light Application — This version is for developers who will create and commercially distribute new applications. It includes application source code, framework binaries/header files, plus Qt and Qtopia tools. The cost is $890.

Greenphone Community Development Kit — Open source community members who wish to develop under the terms of the General Public License (GPL) can purchase a Greenphone Community SDK for $695. This community version is being released by Trolltech for the first time, and includes source code for most components in the Qtopia Phone Edition, Qt and Qtopia tools, the toolchain for the device, and access to periodic Greenphone software updates.

More About the Greenphone

The Greenphone is a GSM/GPRS device that includes Qtopia phone edition 4.1.4, which offers  a touchscreen and keypad user interface. This runs on top of Linux kernel 2.4.19 running on a 312 MHz Intel XScale processor. It has 64 MB RAM and 128 MB of internal storage.

This smartphone also includes a QVGA screen, a mini-SD slot, Bluetooth, a camera, and a mini-USB port.
