Building on the success of earlier versions, Cutting Edge Software has released Quickoffice 6.0 for those Palm OS users who need access to documents on the go (pardon my play on words). We have a fully licensed copy en route and will have a full review up shortly. For now, here’s their official release. Here’s the spec sheet with pricing info.

DALLAS (June 5, 2002)–Cutting Edge Software, Inc. announces today the release of Quickoffice Version 6.0, with industry first ZoomView(tm) technology, expansion card support, and a new desktop interface, added to the award-winning productivity suite for Palm Powered(tm) handheld computers. As handheld devices continue to add new and improved hardware features such as expansion memory, screen resolution, and screen configurations, Cutting Edge Software continues to take advantage of the latest handheld technology with Quickoffice 6.0.

Memory expansion has made it possible to store volumes of business documents and data-files on handhelds. Quickoffice 6.0 supports saving files to and accessing files from memory expansion cards, and also adds full support for the latest Sony NR70 series Palm Powered devices sporting the highest resolution, and largest handheld displays. Quickword 6.0 adds the exclusive ZoomView feature to make it easier than ever to view documents and read ebooks on the newest handhelds by setting not only the display font, but allowing “zooming” to the best size for reading. Finally, the Quickoffice Desktop has been totally revamped for improved usability and functionality in managing files to be synchronized to the handheld.

As increasing models of Palm OS devices are equipped with expansion memory card capabilities, and with the tremendous interest in portable keyboard accessories, more mobile professionals are using their handhelds as laptop replacements. Quickoffice 6.0 provides an ideal productivity solution for those who need to work with Word and Excel files while away from their offices. In this latest version, Cutting Edge Software has provided full operability with Palm OS 4.0 and later ‘virtual file system’ (VFS) capabilities. By enabling users to store and access Quickword documents and Quicksheet spreadsheets from expansion memory cards, including Secure Digital cards and Sony Memory Sticks, users are able to gain quick and easy access to literally hundreds of documents for viewing, editing, printing or emailing to colleagues.

Quickoffice has long been lauded for its ability to work seamlessly with MS Office files on the desktop. Quickoffice Desktop, the desktop companion to the Quickoffice suite, is a powerful tool for enabling users to efficiently work with their Quickoffice files on their desktop PCs. It allows users to efficiently manage their documents outside of the Excel and Word interfaces. Users who have enjoyed using Quickoffice Desktop can now look forward to an even easier-to-use desktop program, with new pull-down menus, customization features, and new tools for managing documents. A new Download menu was designed to further simplify the process of accessing Cutting Edge Software’s growing library of free spreadsheet template workbooks. Direct links are also provided to the most popular sites for downloading free ebooks that can be viewed within Quickword.

Even with improving display resolutions, viewing documents and spreadsheets on the small screens of handheld devices has always been a challenge for some users. With the release of Quickoffice 6.0, Cutting Edge Software has included several enhancements designed to make it easier than ever to view text on the screens of handhelds. The most significant enhancement is Quickword’s exclusive new multi-level ZoomView technology that enables users to zoom in and out on a document without altering font sizes. Quickword is also enhanced by use of the improved Font Convertor(tm) Windows application that will allow conversion of TrueType fonts to any customized set of sizes from 8 point to 26 point, enabling a wider range of display capabilities on high resolution devices. The enhancements to Quickoffice 6.0 are most apparent when used with the newest high-resolution device models, including the Sony NR70 series handhelds, with display resolution up to 320 x 480 pixels.

“Though Quickoffice was recently named the Best Office Suite for Palm OS handhelds, we are still hard at work adding features and performance enhancements for our customers,” said Michael Compeau, Cutting Edge Software’s vice president of business development and planning. “The Quickoffice suite is a powerful productivity toolkit for mobile professionals who need to get their work done no matter where they are.”
