Review – Bejeweled Game of the Year Edition from Astraware (Pocket PC and Palm)

Quick, think of an application on your handheld. Chances are that you named a game. And if it was a game, was it Bejeweled? Bejeweled has been one of the most played games for the PalmOS (and most other handheld platforms). Simply put, it is simply addictive. Match three or more gems in a row and they disappear. Then other gems take their place. A simple, yet addictive concept, this game has been so addictive that awards have even become addictive to Bejeweled (Handango Champion Awards Best Game Application 2003, Handheld Computing Magazine Best Commercial Application, 2001).

Bejeweled is a very simple game. There are two modes of play: Easy and Timed. Both of them play out in the same way, with the difference being the Timed game has timer at the bottom of the screen. The more gem combinations that you create, the longer you get to play.

I am sure that if you are reading this that you want to know what separates the Game of the Year Edition from any other Bejeweled version. The main addition to this version is the within the sounds department. If you own an OS5 handheld from Palm or any PocketPC, then you are able to listen to background music and enhanced sounds. The background music, created by Future Crew composer Skaven, adds suspense and a genuine game feel to Bejeweled. This isn t to say that you cannot play and MP3 over the game and it still sound good. But, if you are wanting to just hear the game go, and maybe save some battery life, then the musical score for Bejeweled will suffice.

In all, Bejeweled is a game that speaks for itself. It has always been a heavily played game for the handheld computer crowd. For those that have played Diamond Mine on the PC or Mac, this is exactly the same game, albeit more portable. PopCap and Astraware have put forth an excellent effort with this Game of the Year Edition of Bejeweled. Small enhancements like having one file to install (one file to install for the game, the music comes in three separate files in the distribution) and background music keep Bejeweled refreshed for those of us who like updates.

Pros:
Addictive
Nice audio and graphics enhancements
Single file install

Cons:
Addictive

Bottom Line:
Astraware has a proven winner here. Bejeweled s Game of the Year Edition is a winner and should be on everyone s handheld.

Purchase Information:
Bejeweled GOTY Edition is $14.95 from our Handango store. A free trial is available.
