Review – Cube Head Pocket PC Puzzle Game

Cascata Games hasn’t been in the Pocket PC arena for all that long, but they’ve introduced a wonderful puzzle game title in the form of CubeHead (download for $18.99 for PocketPC platform, or download a free trial version).  Cube Head is a zany game with fun graphics and highly addictive music.

I could tell you the background to the story, but instead I’ve grabbed an image to let Cascata Games do that:

The aim of this game is very simple, all you have to do is line up tiles in ranks of 3, 4 or 5.  The tiles must be lined up vertically or horizontally.  Check out the screen shot below to see how the board is lined up:

Simply click on the arrows to get a row to shift one place in the direction you choose.  Each time you click though your energy bar is depleted (blue bar on the bottom) so it’s all about being efficient with your clicks. Every time you line up 3 or more items though you are awarded points and more energy.  If you get full energy you are awarded the ability to detonate bombs on the board using the lightning icon at the bottom.  Bombs destroy any tile touching it, this is good if you have a Steel Tile block that prevents you from being able to shift a row — Steel Tiles are very annoying and should be gotten rid of as soon as possible!  Another fun feature is an Easter Egg that pops up now and again on the board and rotates through various game pieces — click on it to stop rotating and see what piece it gives you — just be careful not to click on the Easter Egg when it’s showing a Steel Tile.

There are many options in this game.  You can set difficulty, time allowed, sound preferences, background image preferences or even the ability to download 25 additional free music tracks.  The music in this game is very addictive in and of itself!

Overall I found this game to be a lot of fun and straight forward to play.  It’s not as addictive as Bejeweled was for me — but maybe that’s because I scared myself getting so addicted to that puzzle game and have since better at avoiding that.  I’d still recommend this game to any puzzle fan out there.  It’s a game with a fun theme and graphics combined with excellent play.
