Review – Extinction from Click Gamer (Pocket PC)

It is always nice to see the classic games brought back into existence.  After playing the game (on my now outdated Toshiba e335 Pocket PC), I was sent back to my childhood days of classic Defender.  The objective of this game is real simple: save the colonists from the aliens by destroying their ships before they can capture the colonists.  You control your spaceship (battleship) by using the navigator dial on your Pocket PC device. There are two weapon buttons: a single-fire (calendar button) and the smart bomb (tasks button).  The smartbomb is very handy if there are lots of alien ships on one screen, press it once and it will destroy all of them (there are only 3 smart bombs per ship).  There is a radar shown at the top of the screen that will tell you where the alien ships are as you are flying along.

My only real complaint is that the navigator button (up, down, forward and reverse) is real sensitive and sometimes sent me in the wrong direction.  This is a drawback of my handheld device, but it still makes moving around the screen slightly difficult and worth noting.  An external gamepad would make game play much easier.

Bottom Line: (A-) Great game to play on your handheld, if you played this game when you were young there is no learning required.
Tips: Save your smartbombs for harder (higher) levels.
Pros: Super graphics (color), sounds and realism, low price.
Cons: Lacks high scores table
