“HandStory Suite, the acclaimed ‘Swiss Army Knife of media viewers,’ is easy-to-use, multi-function information software for your handheld and PC. HandStory Browser for Palm or Pocket PC displays texts, eBooks, Images, and Web Clips, all from within a single application. HandStory Converter for your PC is a versatile converter of texts, images, and Web content.”
When Brian handed this to me to review, I must admit that I had never heard anything about HandStory before. Well, that was all about to change in a few weeks after using this all-in-one media converter/viewer for the Pocket PC.
HandStory is a very unique program in that it can do just about anything you can imagine when it comes to converting and viewing media files. Handstory works “hand-in-hand” with your Desktop PC to synchronize your data and convert media in the way that you want.
Now on to the features:
List View displays all the files on your device that HandStory recognizes. You can tap the file to view it or do other self-explanatory things.
Update Clip is used to update websites that you have ‘clipped’ for HandStory. Clipping is very similar to AvantGo: you can download web content for viewing later or while you are wirelessly connected. You can update clips wirelessly or when synching.
General Options can be set to accommodate your specific needs in regards to viewing media through HandStory. Clear Type can be enabled/disabled here as well as being able to customize how you read text and ebook files.
The Viewer is what gets it all done. Here you will be able to view the clips, images, or text you selected from the List View. There are tons of options here for each of the types of media. With clips, you can choose to update clips, change the text size, email or beam clips, etc. With images, you can browse through images on your device, email or beam images, play with the zoom, fit it to the screen, full screen it, and others. With text/ebooks, you can email or beam, find, and use bookmarks among other things.
And for the converting:
How could they make this any easier? HandStory has magnificently integrated its functions into the Windows shell, making for quick conversions to your mobile device. How easy? Right click, and “Save to Pocket PC”.
When converting images, you have the options to crop them on the fly. This is a very sweet feature for those who don’t have time to fire up Photoshop or who are space-conscious. You can also choose how the image will be saved: 16 grays, 256 colors, or high color. With text you can choose files to convert, highlight text in a browser and opt to save or clip it, or even append text on the clipboard to a file (or by itself).
The final feature worth mentioning is the ability to convert Palm PDB files to the Pocket PC. Although I do not personally own a Palm device, I can see this being a huge benefit for people that have both. HandStory can convert files such as Palm Doc, Palm image, or HandStory Clip, and save them to your Pocket PC device.
I couldn’t really find anything negative to say about the HandStory Suite. They definitely have their act together. I would highly recommend this program to people that like to get things done quickly and effectively, and saying the HandStory Suite is the ‘Swiss Army Knife of media viewers’ is an understatement!
The HandStory Suite is available from Handango here for $19.95 ($10.00 off original price). They also offer a Palm version.
