MMS , Bluetooth , GPRS , diary, address book, MP3 , MPEG-4, stylet, camera… it is simple, it does not miss anything in P800, the new top-of-the-range one of the manufacturer nippo-Swedish Sony-Ericsson. With Nokia 7650, P800 is certainly the m diaphone more awaited re-entry. NetEconomy com tested of exclusiveness!

Having had only one prototype that for a few hours, this test does not claim to be complete. It makes it possible however to have a first idea of the potential of P800, spearhead of a new generation of terminals: “m diaphones”.

P800 is thus a hybrid apparatus. It is at the same time a large telephone and a small personal assistant. A little thick (27 mm), it posts on the other hand a screen of 40*61 mm, when the valve is open, much smaller than that of PocketPC. The apparatus has of a touch screen and a small stylet, hung on the right side of the apparatus. P800 has a port of extension MemoryStick Duo which is alas not compatible with the current MemoryStick charts (on the other hand, the Duet can be read on normal a MemoryStick port). P800 also has of a catch helmet (not standard), of a side serrated roller on the left side and two keys on the right side: the catch of photograph and the access to the services on line.

The originality of the apparatus is to have a small integrated numerical camera, which makes it possible to take photograph of a resolution of 640*480, 320*240 or 160*120 pixels. The user can choose with his stylet between 3 levels of quality for the image and can modify the luminosity or contrast. The quality of the photographs is rather low if one compares it with a numerical camera but proves to be sufficient within a ludic framework.

At the software level, P800 inaugurates Symbian version 7, the software initiallement developed by Psion for its computers of pocket. The interface utlisator is very convivial and it takes only a few minutes to be accustomed to it. The applications accessible by small icons are coloured. One will regret only the absence of banner page, summarizing the appointments of the day for example.

The seizure is done using the stylet, either by recognition of writing (CICs JotPro), or by the use of a small virtual keyboard. The compactness of the screen makes however very seized rather delicate.

The apparatus is before a whole telephone and it has very interesting functions of personalization of the address book. One can for example associate a card contact a photograph and a specific ringing to easily identify a call, without very taking down. The address book and the diary are very simple to use and can be synchronized with any SyncML software and LotusNotes and Outlook.

“communicating” apparatus, P800 has a “universal” software of transport since it supports the SMS, the SMS CellBroadcast, the MMS and e-mail. Sony-Ericsson indicates that the customer of transport also supports the enclosures and has a viewer for the files microsoft Word, Excel or powerpoint.

Developed by Opera, the navigator is also very complete since it gives access to the Web sites, wap (version 2.0) and I-mode. It is thus possible to start a phone call while clicking on a hypertext link what opens new prospects for the editors for services on line.

In term of entertainment, P800 is again very complete since it has of a reader MP3 (+WAV, AMR, WITH, MIDDAY), of a reader MPEG-4 (provided by PacketVideo) and a virtual machine java for downloadable plays. The processor seems perfectly able to read these files, including plays in 3d. The prototype tended nevertheless to rather easily plant in the event of a little fast opening several applications of this type.

In front of so much of functions ‘ multim dia’ the Storage internal 12 Mo is thus likely very quickly to be saturated and the low capacity (16Mo) of the expander cards MemoryStickDuo could frustrate its future customers. In spite of 13 hour an announced endurance in communication (and 400 hours in day before), the battery of P800 does not exceed a few hours in the event of intensive use of the functions multi-media, the bluetooth and access GPRS. The mobinaute will have to thus relearn to manage this element unless it does not choose the battery high capacity provided in option.

Hybridization of a telephone, of a personal assistant, a walkman and a camera, P800 in any case seems to make a success of its bet and could allure the wandering executives, tired well to transport 3 or 4 different apparatuses. The great unknown factor remains the price which should be at the neighbourhoods of 1000 euros. The apparatus will be available to the fourth quarter 2002. A beautiful Christmas present for technophiles!
