RIM Goes for Enterprise Instant Messaging in a Big Way

Research in Motion announced today that it has made agreements with three important players in the enterprise instant messaging market.

Soon, BlackBerry users will have the option of doing IM through Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005, IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing, or Novell GroupWise Messenger.

RIM “Enterprise instant messaging is an important application for our customers and wireless instant messaging will be a very complementary addition to the existing suite of productivity applications available to BlackBerry users,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion.

None of the software necessary to allow BlackBerry handhelds to connect to these servers will be ready until much later this year, but RIM went ahead and made these announcements because the Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2005 is going on now in Orlando.
