Rumor – palmOne to License Windows Mobile

by Reads (4,612)

This rumor was popular a few months back, but it now has new life for legitimate reasons. At the 3GSM World Congress, Peter Knook, the product manager for Windows Mobile, said that announcements concerning Motorola and palmOne would be issued at a press conference later today.

Assuming this is true, palmOne licensing Windows Mobile for their PDAs and Smartphones is the most exciting guess. palmOne has denied any intention to license WM the last time these rumors came up. But let’s be honest, palmOne isn’t the strongest of companies right now; they could potentially double their Treo sales by offering a WM flavor. It’s premature though to make this assumption. palmOne is also a licensee of Exchange for their Versa Mail program, so it could be something along those lines as well. has the report:

Today, during keynote session in the morning Peter Knook – the highest guy in the hierarchy in Windows Mobile division – was participating (full report from this session we will publish later) and he mentioned something interesting:

he said that major announcements related to Windows Mobile and Motorola and palmOne (!) will be presented during press conference of Microsoft at 3GSM World Congress 2005. This press conference will take place on 18:00 CET so there are yet a couple hours till this information will be public, but it could be that palmOne actually will start licensing Windows Mobile software to power their Treo smartphones!

This is rumor yet, nothing confirmed, but the fact is that palmOne indicated that it is looking around for some operating software to differentiate from their only platform: Palm OS.
